Flowing Full Circle

Its not everyday you are driving along the California Coast and you see this type of fantastic scene. A fresh water cascade flowing out of the Big Sur Mountains right onto the wet sand? It seems like a movie set more than a real life landscape. This one along with 26 other Los Padres Forest paintings will be on display through October 6th at the Sojourner(134 E. Canon Perdido St.) in downtown Santa Barbara. There will be a wine and cheese reception this First Thursday the 6th of September from 5-8pm. Come early rather than later to get a good look at the art!

Vibrant Big Sur
oil on canvas
30x40
$1750

My 5 year old boy Theo was with me for the second weekend in a row to paint and explore the Big Sur coast. I brought a dozen of his favorite toys and set up an elaborate train layout in the back of my camper shell. My brother Blair was with us for this trip and we were painting just a few feet from a 500 foot vertical drop so Theo had to stay on lockdown. I had my back to the open passenger window of my truck where Theo was leaning out much of the time to check on us as we painted. He behaved so well for the first hour but as time went on he leaned out the window more and more with requests to move onwards. I was practically giving him a piggy back ride in the end there and some of his youthful energy overflowed into this painting.

The Devereux Lagoon is one of those extremely paintable locations in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area. Just drive out there one day and paint it and you will see that I'm telling the truth. Its all laid out for you! The perfect composition awaits with foreground reflections and distant mountains rising from the hazy atmosphere.

Sunday Above Cachuma
 oil on canvas
18x36
$1300

Its unusual for me to paint on a Sunday afternoon. I think its just ingrained in me after all those years in school or the workforce to take a Sunday off. Sunday is a fine day to paint. I learned that again just last week there above Lake Cachuma. I'm getting some pieces together for an October Los Padres Forest Watch show at Santa Barbara's Sojourner Restaurant.
