The Owens Valley
oil on canvas
15x30
$650

Yet another simplified approach here. There are days when there is only an hour or so to prop up the easel and lay out a composition. This was one of those times. I remember telling my ride , "I'll see you in an hour"  up there at the foot of the Sierras. No time to contemplate, let it flow like a steep little mountain creek. There is always time later on the porch to fine tune a canvas and make it somewhat presentable.

Art and music should be able to speak for themselves. If you hear a song a few times on the radio and begin to love it or see a painting you like right from the get go its not a result of some words you read explaining how great it is. This "blog" thing seems quite ridiculous to me at times. Trying to come up with something clever to say usually backfires on me. I guess just a simple little explanation of where the place is should be enough. I have been gravitating towards the simplified approach in this one lately. Perhaps I'm just being lazy, but I like the outcome nonetheless.

Golden Gaviota
8x16
oil on canvas

This stretch of coast is pretty amazing. The last untouched southern Californian coastal ranches will likely be developed someday. Until then I will continue to head north with my fingers crossed to fill another canvas and ride another wave.

High Above Summerland
oil on canvas
12x24

December is the best time of the year to sell paintings. I have been extremely busy fine tuning new and old paintings for my end of year sale. I started this process weeks ago and have been neglecting the urge to get out into nature and create something fresh. Just a few days ago I woke up early and set out to fill an empty canvas with something new. I found myself high above Summerland for this one. It felt so good to lay the paint down, it was like getting my fix. I am truly looking forward to the new year with so many good clean fixes on the horizon.

Yosemite
oil on canvas
30x40
$2200

Being overwhelmed by such old time standards like this come easy to most. The whole Yosemite Valley stuns millions of people every year. I got a chance recently to paint the iconic place and it was as incredible as I had remembered. It was over a quarter of a century since my last visit as a kid and the first time since I began plein air painting a decade ago. One of the things I enjoyed as much as the scenery was the way in which the people attending the spectacular ongoing event were awestruck in pure amazement everywhere I looked. Its the kind of beauty that can pull out the nature lover in absolutely everyone.
