The Santa Ynez River
oil on canvas
24x48

This is a view I've driven past a thousand times and have had the urge to paint it for nearly a decade. It is where the Santa Ynez river deposits into Lake Cachuma. The River scooped out a bowl in the cliff face and depending on the time of day the cliff looks quite dramatic. I learned my lesson a few weeks ago trying to paint along the roadside here in the afternoon. Only and hour or so into it the wind started to howl like crazy and I nearly got blown right off the road. Next time I tackle this view I will head up early for the morning light and hopefully less wind. Those bigger canvases act like sails.
