Sketch of Bird Refuge

The term "sketch" is only slightly pretentious compared to some of the other terms used in painting. This was a warm up for the second one that didn't turn out any better, just bigger. The other terms that I've always struggled with are "plein air" meaning that the painting is done out doors, and "alla prima" which means that the painting is done all in one go. That's how I paint, most of the time anyway, but I always feel like a pretentious idiot when explaining to people these simple ideas in French and Italian. Perhaps I should wear a beret next time I go paint and try out a fancy European accent.
